Panama Elects a New Pro-Argriculture President – Why is this Significant?

nito cortizoLast week Panama elected Mr. Laurentino “Nito” Cortizo of the democratic PRD party as their new president. His campaign was ran on a center-right, business friendly platform and his election has been greeted with much optimism by the investment community.

While the outgoing president, Mr. Juan Carlos Varela, made good on his campaign promise to investigate and prosecute corruption of the prior administration, it was generally perceived this came at the expense of driving further economic growth. In 2018, Panama’s annual GDP growth slipped below 5% for the first time since 2009, while it peaked above 12.5% during the prior administration.

The new President is a well established business man with strong political experience and acumen. After his eduction in the United States, he managed a construction materials company and a cattle raising company. He also served as Agricultural Minister and President of the National Assembly.text to your email.

As ex agricultural minister and proud cattle ranger he made several campaign pledges aimed at boosting Panama’s agricultural sector. He’s also pro export subsidies on key crops, which include pineapples, to help make them even more competitive on the global markets.

Panama’s tropical climate with plenty of rainfall is ideal for farming, and with a pro-agriculture President in charge, now is a better time than ever to invest in agriculture in Panama!

Please note that the ROI calculations in our Pineapple Farm Investment Brochure don’t take into account the current subsidies on pineapple exports. Our pineapple farm business model is completely viable without them. However the anticipated subsidies would of course increase the current projected ROI of 17% per year for our investors.
